"Swarm no.1" - watercolor, 33" x 27"
Our fears and anxieties seep into our daily lives like an unseen fog; we may awake to find ourselves enveloped by what seemed, singularly, innocuous. “Swarm no.1” is the largest piece in a series of detailed watercolor paintings featuring somewhat abstract atmospheric constructions of mosquitoes, hovering en masse. What appeals to me about the medium is its ability to build in subtle layers or create defined shapes of color—floating pigment, suspended and controlled by my hand, or allowed to flow as it will, like it has a mind of its own. By creating something soft and eerily “beautiful” in a medium I associate with lovely landscapes and decorative botanicals, I strove to subvert the constant buzz that nagged at my mind, while creating a vision of what I was afraid might be approaching on the near horizon.
